I found this picture of a caterpillar and decided it would be a great start for a toy design. Lots of textured bits, not too finicky, nice and chubby …I’m going to make this one using undyed wool. Taking into account that even plant dyes need mordants (i.e. chemicals) to achieve stable and bright colours and that toys tend to get near mouths with most kids, it seems the best way to go is to stick with the naturals.
Plans afoot then, for a large toy (60cms) mostly in brown, stuffed with wool. Cuddly, natural and warm. A rough sketch then…
You can hopefully see the likeness (to the caterpillar, not to me!)
Pictures soon of the finished item.
